RaNdOm AcCiDeNtS?

I was listening to a song yesterday that espouses a very different point of view than the one that I hold. The song’s writer saw the world as random and accidental—no plan or purpose, no rhyme or reason. I can understand how he might have seen things that way. Personal tragedy tends to make a lot of people say, “If there is a God, why do bad things happen to good people.” This view is skewed and based on a flawed premise, namely that we are good people. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Now I am not going to sit here and take a hard line on cause and effect. I’m not saying that you deserve everything that happens to you. What I am saying is the things we face are the result of the Fall. The things we face are not the result of a non-existent God. They are the result of a world that has chosen to live as if God does not exist.

I think about this song writer, who is truly one of the all time greats. His songs are not accidental. They are not the result of a lot of hard work, skill and talent. If something as simple as a song takes hard work, skill and planning, and to bring that song to the world takes a lot of processes and work, oh there are no doubt some spontaneous things that happen along the way, but even these come about because of years of practice and skill. Those of us who work in the world of creativity, have more reason than most to believe in a Creator. If it takes precision and skill to create a work of art, how can we possibly believe that a Universe can be random? Bottom line—If there’s a creation, there’s a Creator.

I don’t want to live in an accidental world. I don’t want to live in a world where I’m an accident. I’d rather live in a world where I may not always understand what’s happening, but that there is a plan and a purpose for my existence. I fully intend to live on purpose, because where there is purpose, there is hope.
