This will be my last book of the year. It’s another adult coloring book featuring my creature art. I call it Kaleidoscopic Creatures book 4. I love doing these things but it’s time to move on to something new for 2017… Stay tuned.

I love to draw these things. There’s something about the mystery of drawing an eighth of a design and then seeing what it will look like when it’s all put together. It’s very loose and freeing. This is the closest thing an artist can do to “jamming.” When the TV’s on at the end of a busy day, I just grab a couple of Sharpies and start to jam. It’s fun, plus you know I love to draw some creatures.
Should be out in a week or two.

As you know, I usually advocate working on more than one project at a time and this is an example of that. I work on my coloring books two at a time so I can jump off one style when I get blocked. I usually finish them within a few days of each other. They served as their own diversions. Of course I will also admit this is very much a side project that I do largely just for fun and it really is. There’s something about designing an eighth of a piece of art and not knowing what it will look like until it’s put together.

One of the things that has brought me a lot of joy lately is illustrating adult coloring books. I became enamored with the mandala style, but my images have nothing to do with anything but creating multifaceted fun images to color. For that reason, I call mine Kaleidoscopics. One of the things I love about this style is it’s quite mysterious. While I may have some idea what the final piece will look like, I never know until I assemble the final piece. The reason is simple, I only ever draw an eighth of the image, then mirror it over and over again. the same basic thing that happens in a kaleidoscope, hence the title I love to see the final image. I design these to be highly detailed, challenging and fun. The book is available now through Amazon.com and at many of my speaking appearances.
I hope you like it.

It’s been a little while since I submitted an entry to IllustrationFriday.com but I decided today would be a good day to do it. IllustrationFriday.com is a site that provides a weekly one word challenge to illustrators as a way to getting our creative juices flowing. It just so happens I have the perfect entry for this one. It’s a page from my recent adult coloring books Kaleidoscopics Book 1 available on Amazon.

My new adult coloring book Kaleidoscopics book 1 is available now. Want to see what’s inside? Check out the video.

I call them Kaleidoscopics. Some people call them Mandalas, but I’m just not comfortable with that. Some Mandalas deal with eastern religious ritual and that’s not where I am going. These images are just for fun. I create a small portion of the image and then cut and assemble them as if the image was reflected over and over again, as if it were being viewed through that favorite of childhood toys, a kaleidoscope, hence the name.

This is sort of like an artistic jam session for me. While there is definitely some planning, the finished piece is always a pleasant surprise. I had a great time creating them and I hope those who get the book have a great time coloring them. I’m excited about this adult coloring movement. I believe all people have the ability to create and make art, but most of them have buried it, often because someone told them they weren’t good enough. This movement will no doubt encourage many to try again and discover their inner creative, but even if they just do it to relax and have fun, that is a great step in the right direction.

If you like, you can order the book here.

I’m finalizing the covers for my two adult coloring books. Kaleidoscopic Creatures and Kaleidoscopics. What do you think? I am looking forward to getting these out there.

Of course I am always open to a few new opportunities and projects. There are times in your life where you feel like you’re in your zone. I am in one of those times.
God is good.
