The Finger…

Write an intriguing title… CHECK! No seriously, I was driving home from church when I got behind a vehicle that proudly displayed a sticker, with the image of a skeletal hand giving me (and everyone else in the world) the finger. There was part of me that wanted to return the favor, but when you put “Pastor” or “Reverend” in front of your name, that is frowned upon, and, for the record, I didn’t really want to do it, though I must admit to wondering how he would feel if I did. By now, you’re wondering what this has to do with creative ministry. Maybe nothing, or maybe everything.

You see, what it brings to mind is the messages you put out to the world matter. What makes a person put a skeletal “impudicus digitus” (Look it up!) on their car to flip off everyone behind them? I don’t know, but none of it is very positive. Those of us who make art and represent Jesus, have a unique opportunity. We can put positive things into the world. We can use the gifts God has given us to take people to a better place. We can be bringers of joy and maybe even create work that points people to something eternal. Maybe it’s not a sticker on your car, but look at your work and think about what messages your work puts out there, and then ask God what He would have you create to make positive change in His world.
