So many people are living in a world of hurt because they are trying to be the hero in their own story. We want to be the winner. We want to conquer. We want to come out on top. We want to be the hero of our own story. My best advice? Stop it! The position of hero is taken. Jesus is the hero and to try to fill that role is far too big for us. No wonder we spend so much time frustrated and feeling like failures.
Think about it for a moment. If Jesus is the hero of the story, some of the pressure is off. We’re not responsible to win the victory, instead we are responsible to faithfully follow His lead. I’ll give you an earthly example from the world of politics. In the midst of 2022 fuel prices went insanely high here in the states. Almost all of the sudden people created stickers with the current occupant of the White House pointing at the price you paid for fuel and saying, “I did that!” Before long all his supporters marched in lock step saying, “You can’t blame that on him.” Citing market factors and a whole bunch of other things that may or may not have actually been the cause. Then the prices went down and his supporters lauded his efforts as if he could not be held account table tor the bad news, but they were glad to take credit for the good news. This is not a political statement. Neither side can have it both ways and both sides seemed to try. It’s similar with the Lord. If the battle is the Lord’s and it is, then the victory is His. He is the hero of the story. We need not concern ourselves with wins and losses, we need only concern ourselves with faithfulness and trusting Him in faith.
There is a verse in the Bible that says “Be still and know that I am God.” It’s a great reminder, but for this context let’s look at how the New American Standard Bible says it. “Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Stop trying to be the hero in your own story. Instead, trust God enough to rest in Him, trust in Him, and be a faithful servant, doing the things He has called a created you to do. Then when He comes through (and sooner or later, He will) give Him the glory.
