How Can Artists Serve?

Posted: July 14, 2021 in Uncategorized

It would not be too large a stretch to say that the founding verse of this blog and the related ministry is 1 Peter 4:10. Each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. For me this is a huge passion, but how do we, as artists, live it out? Today I’d like to give you a real life example.

My friends Matt and Charlotte Kulp have an unusual passion. They raise Monarch butterflies. They go our roaming the country side searching milkweed plants for Monarch eggs and caterpillars. For them this is a labor of love but beyond that, they see it as a way that they can speak to things like conservation, and even glorify God as they have found many parallels between these beautiful insects and Christian Spirituality. The life cycle of these amazing creatures could be illustrative of some wonderful Christian teachings, not to mention the amazing creative power of God, but I will let Matt and Charlotte call that out for themselves, because they recently launched a YouTube channel called Monarch Miracles. If you find nature fascinating you need to get in on the ground floor of this blog and subscribe.

The more I speak to Matt and Charlotte, the more excited for them I become. What they are teaching is interesting and will surely bless many people, including hopefully (from my perspective) themselves. They work tirelessly throughout the Summer months and last year they raised and released nearly 500 butterflies. I could see them using their channel and other related things to teach a lot of people about butterflies, God and more. I could see them encouraging and inspiring others on how to make a real difference by raising these marvelous creatures. As I said before I am excited by their possibilities, and truth be known, I want to help them, and I want to serve them. The thing is, I can. Everything I know about butterflies, I have pretty much learned from them, so, chances are, I have nothing to offer them on that front, but I am an artist. They need a logo, a website, presentation graphics and more. Well, friends that us my wheelhouse and this is the point.

I’m sure if they wanted to, Matt and Charlotte probably could figure out how to make a passable logo, They are a couple of creative people, but they both work full time, and they can only pursue the hobby in their spare time. Saving these wonderful creatures is a lot of work. Each individual caterpillar needs to have a fresh milkweed leaf each day. Let that leaf grow old and sooner or later the caterpillar will die. They also wipe the leaves down individual to protect the caterpillars. They can either lay aside some of their already limited time to work on logos and other such things, but all that will do is subtract from the number of butterflies they can rescue. It’s far better for them to invest their time in their strengths and allow someone else to work where they might be weaker. For this reason, I decided to volunteer to create the logo below. I’m also preparing to help with other things as needed.

One of the easiest ways we artists can serve in our gifts, is to find someone who needs what we do and then offer our services. If I can save them money, and free them up to do what they do best, I believe we will see God glorified and the more of us who help others build their dreams in big and small ways, the better this world will be, because if people can walk into their God given dreams, great things will happen.

Who needs you to offer your gift?
