Creative Insomnia

Posted: July 9, 2021 in Uncategorized

It’s 4:25 a.m. and I’ve already been awake for a few hours. It drives me crazy. I wake up and the idea machine turns on. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the ideas, and tonight I feel like I have a really good one, the problem is, I am tired, like really tired, and I can’t help but wonder if it will still be a good idea at a reasonable hour. That remains to be seen. Of course this is also happening at a time when I am insanely busy and my great idea is off topic from the things that must be done.

I think part of the problem is I am also dealing with an issue that is giving me a lot of stress and trepidation, and the idea is kind of a merciful diversion, so while I can’t sleep at least I am not obsessing (at least as much). I am really grateful that I am not a 9-5er tonight (er, this morning) because I am sure at some point I will have to crash at least for a little while. So in the mean time, what do I do? Record the idea, because ideas are valuable, and sometimes even the ones that seem a little odd are only really that way because it’s not their time. I may make a few preliminary steps toward bringing the idea to fruition, while I am thinking of them, get a little work done to take a few “Must Be Done’s” off the list, and write a blog post to let you know you’re not the only one.

Creative insomnia can be a bear, but you never know when that bear will bear fruit. Some of my best stuff comes in the obscene hours when the rest of the world is asleep. Thank God for the wake up call and then get some rest.
