The Joy of Diversions

Posted: June 11, 2021 in Uncategorized

One of my favorite ways to beat creative block is with a diversion. This is something to reorient your mind when your creative process hits a wall. Sometimes it’s as simple as having a second work project going that you can jump to, so you can keep accomplishing something, but as that great philosopher Jack Torrance once wrote (very repeatedly) “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” We who do creative work can really struggle with this because our work is something we usually really enjoy. For this reason, I encourage creatives to have a hobby. Mine is model building. It is a creative pursuit to a point and uses a similar skill set to my work, but it is more regimented (or at least it can be). There are instructions to be followed, so you can allow your mind to wander, which often is all that is needed to “beat the block.” Here is one of my recent projects. It is modeled after a car I had when I was in my early 20s. This one looks better than the real car ever did. I added a few pieces here and there until it got completed. Quite a few writing projects happened around this one, and it really helped me to make great progress.

I give you my 1969 Big Bad Blue AMX.
