Have you ever been in a place where you are out of ideas? Or maybe you’re in a place where you have so many ideas that you don’t know what to do? The answer is simple seek the Lord. Ask Him what He would have you do. Sometimes the response is a “bolt from the blue.” You get an idea, you’re energized and it feels like the whole thing as a download from the Almighty. I love it when that happens and most of my most useful ideas have come in that way. Other times it’s more subtle. You just continue to pray and act on the little nudges. I will sometimes just start doodling or “free-writing” (writing everything that comes to mind until an idea begins to form) and let the Lord lead. That way, at the very least, I am honing my skills. One thing is for certain, the verse is true, If you seek Him you will find Him if you seek Him with all of your heart (Jeremiah 29:13 paraphrased slightly). If God wants you to do it, He will guide you, sooner or later.
You might be asking, “but what if He doesn’t?” Perhaps you have a multitude of ideas and for one reason or another it just doesn’t seem to be working out. Maybe you’re lacking a resource or a skill that you need to do to complete the task at hand. What I suggest is to store up those ideas. Keep them in a file for later. Secondly, find one that you can move forward and start. It is possible that God is trying to stretch you creatively or wanting to help you learn a new skill. Also remember we were not designed to be independent, so much as we were designed to be interdependent, in other words, perhaps to finish this project you will need a collaborator or a benefactor. Perhaps this will help you meet someone who can help you take the idea “home.” Further remember Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion in the day of Christ Jesus.” If this is the case you take something as far as you can and then entrust it to the Lord to finish what you started, because if that thing is truly of Him sooner or later He will finish it and use it to bring about the end He desires.
You might have times that are especially dry, where it feels like God is silent, and no matter what you do, He will not speak. What I have found in these times is that it usually means that He has already given me something to do and I haven’t done it. He will likely not give me something else until I have been faithful to carry out what He has put before me. In those times, it’s a good idea to go back to where you have your ideas written down and then you know what you need to do, right?
Seek the Lord!
