Occasionally I will do illustrations for my PowerPoint presentations at church, This is one of those. A rich man came to Jesus and wanted to know how to get to heaven. The correct answer to that question is to turn from your sin and believe in Jesus, but Jesus was seeing something in the man that had to change. He had great wealth and he was too attached to his wealth. It was becoming an idol in his life, so Jesus told him to sell all he had and give to the poor. It isn’t that Christianity is about poverty. It is about making sure our priorities are in the right place and that we are trusting God more than the things He has given us. Here is the picture.
Jesus as at the temple watching what the people were doing. The rich people were putting on a great show of their giving. But then a poor widow came up and only put in two pennies. Jesus said she gave more than anyone else, because where the rest gave from their wealth, she gave all she had. For her to survive from that point forward would require her to live by faith.
