I have been inadvertently separated from my flat bed scanner for a few days. This has put a little limit on the way I usually do art, and so I have a choice. I can forego making art until I have everything I need again, or I can start making art in other ways. Needless to say I have decided to do the latter. As some of you know, I have been wanting to do the images from Revelation for quite some time. I even posted my sketch of the seven eyed seven horned lamb of God a few weeks back. Well I have decided to begin to take on another project.
Revelation 12:3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads.
This is a word picture of Satan. It is, as are many images in Revelation, symbolic rather than literal. Still I have decided to paint it literal. My goal rather than to do a single image of the dragon is to paint each face as a portrait, and then display the portraits together as a collection. I finally got around to painting the first head. Now over all I am not real happy with this one, but it at least give me a direction to move in. The second one is on the easel now and I already like it better. That’s kind of the point of all of this. You experiment and make adjustments, until you have something you like.
As I go on, I have questions. Like in this passage the dragon has seven heads and ten horns. Do you think that means ten crowns per head or that the crowns on the heads add up to seven? I favor the latter theory, but I welcome your thoughts. Share them in the comments below
