Okay I am going to confess it, and I know I might lose “cool points” with some, that’s okay I didn’t have that many to begin with, so here goes. I like Christian movies. Now don’t get me wrong, I have seen some bad ones, but man I have enjoyed a few. Tonight I watched Selfie Dad starring Christian comedian, Michael Jr. It’s the story of a former stand up comic, turned frustrated TV editor, who finds his way onto YuTo. Along the way, he makes all the mistakes most Christians and artists make, grows in his faith and ends up well let’s just say he learned a lot. Now, will anyone win an Oscar for this piece? No, but can I tell you, it’s a feel good piece with a nice redemption story, that I really enjoyed.
Christian films are often low budget and don’t have all the bells and whistles of big Hollywood productions, and this one is no exception, but you know what, it communicated the Gospel, showed Christians in an authentic light and made me feel good and right now the world could use a lot more of that. Yes a lot of critics pan Christian films, but as far as this writer is concerned, this is the spirit of what I am talking about. If you have a good story to tell, you don’t need to wait to be picked anymore, Create a great story and find a way to share it with the world. Remember, we don’t create for the critics, we create what God lays on our hearts and put it out there for the world to see. The ones who it blesses become our tribe. The ones who don’t like it have plenty of other choices that will better meet their needs. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and it blessed me and made me want to revisit the screen play that lies about half finished on my hard drive.
Do your best work with the resources you have and share it with the world. Someone will love it.
