It means out of nothing. It’s the way God created the heavens and the earth. He spoke things into existence. He said let their be light and there was light and as such He created essentially everything. Of course at the creation of man we get a different picture. When God created man He made him out of what God had already made. He made us from the dust of the earth, and then He breathed His life into us and we became living souls. the Bible further says we were created in His image, and while there is some debate as to what that means and its extent, this much is clear, we were created to be like Him. We were created with His attributes and one of those attributes if creativity.
Now of course we don’t create ex nihilo. Instead we create from what has already been created. We take the materials of God’s earth and we use them to create things that ideally point people back to the Creator. As Christian artists this is a huge part of why we were created and gifted as we have been. Now this can manifest in a variety of ways. For some, they will create in the context of worship, drawing people into God’s message and connecting people to God’s heart. For others, we create in the marketplace to bless people and help them to accomplish things they could not on their own. Still others create evangelistically, using our creations to open doors to larger conversations and hopefully opening the door to an introduction of people back to their Creator,
At the end of the day if you are a Christian creative, there are a multitude of ways you can faithfully serve the Lord with your gifts, but please note, you were created to create. So make that work, solve that problem, reach that “audience,” touch that life, but whatever you do, create!
