What Are YOU Going to Do About It?

Posted: March 11, 2021 in Uncategorized

I remember being a bullied kid and dreading this question. Someone would come and attack or humiliate me and ask me what I was going to do about it. Of course since I was usually either outsized of outnumbered there was precious little I could do as the fight or flight response wreaked havoc on my psyche. That is not how I am asking that question.

Instead I want you to imagine seeing a problem, or something that needs correcting. Maybe it’s an injustice that needs to be rectified, or someone who needs help. Maybe it’s big, maybe it’s small, but you look at it and you think “Someone would do something about that.” What if it’s you? What if you’re somebody? What if this thing is a burden that God has laid on your heart and all of the sudden it’s not some nasty bully asking the question but your loving Heavenly Father saying “What Are YOU Going to Do About It?”

Now I know the temptation and I know that fight or flight response is usually right there telling you, “It’s too big!” or “It will be too difficult.” or “I’m just one person and there’s nothing I can do.” May I suggest that you don’t leave it at that. Remember who is asking the question. This is not just some weak frail human, this is the Creator of the Universe. He has no limitations and He wants to do something great in our world by working through you. Are you ready to stand with Him.

For me there has been something on my heart for quite some time. It looks to me like there are many people who are walking away from the church, and that the church is losing its influence on our world. I think that’s a tragedy. I spent over a third of my life outside of the church and when I came into the church, I found what I was looking for. Jesus saved me and changed my life and the contributions of God’s church to my day to day life have been immeasurable. I want that for everyone. Moreover, I know that the Lord desires that none perish but that everyone will come to repentance. I am convinced that not only doers the church of Jesus Christ remain relevant but that it is more needed than ever in my lifetime. So I stand before what I consider to be the greatest problem of our age and my loving Heavenly Father asks What am I going to do about it?

First I ask a question, “Lord, what would you have me do about it.” The conclusion that keeps coming to mind is What has God put in my hand? What has He given me that can be used? I keep feeling that the key to this will have something to do with creative gifts. Not just that I will use my creative gifts although that is clearly part of what will likely be used, but I also feel called to help the church to embrace creativity and to help creative people to embrace the church. I feel like that is a huge part of my calling, and so I press on. Now truth be known, I can’t do this on my own. I know the Lord is with me, but I can’t help but wonder if you dear reader figure into this as well. If you’re reading this, you obviously feel some leading toward using your creative gifts to serve the Lord. Would you consider praying and maybe collaborating or inviting others into this conversation?
