One of my long time readers, was reading my post “Stuck” and related to the thought of being “cancelled” as a source of discouragement and possibly even being blocked. I had a few thoughts and I decided to share them as a post, in case anyone else is being adversely effected by cancel culture from a standpoint of creative discouragement.
Let’s start by being real. Jesus told us people would hate us if we belonged to Him. We know this because they hated Him first. Now for the record, I don’t like to be hated or want to be hated. I have no intention of being intentionally offensive. My hope is to follow the admonition to speak the truth in love and I try to do the same in my art and the other content that I create. Truth be known I have “cancelled” a few of my own pieces, because I was angry and while the things I created were truth, the love may have been a little harder to find. Remember if people hate us because we belong to Jesus, that is a badge of honor. If they hate us because we are being jerks, that’s on us and there’s no honor there at all.
Let’s start off with the truth. Jesus was totally perfect and totally righteous and one could argue he got “cancelled” in the most brutal way possible. We also need to keep in mind that three days later, He rose and He still reigns. People tried to cancel Him but they ended up playing into His hand and bringing about their own Salvation if they would just repent and believe. Likewise, if the Lord calls us to something, even if it gets cancelled by the cancel culture, God can and will still use it to His glory. This does not mean that the work or its reception will be pain or aggravation free, as a matter of fact the more Kingdom good the work will do, the more likely it is to be opposed.
What it all comes down to is if God is calling you to do something and you are faithful, that work will do precisely what God intends for it to do. God is all powerful but faithfulness comes down to us. At the end of the day, the only one who can truly cancel you is you. Follow God’s call. Do your best work and let the cancel culture play into God’s hand if they want, because in the end, God wins.
God’s plan is secure. The Gospel will do it’s work and Jesus is coming. That will never be cancelled.
