You’re Beautiful and Don’t You Forget It

We who spend a great deal of time trying to create beauty seem to have a special sense of the beauty in the world around us. God seems to have given us a special sense of appreciation, to the point where we can find the beauty others miss. It’s an incredible gift, but there is one place where most of us lack this perception and that’s in the mirror. Why is that?

I’m not talking about narcissistic vanity or anything of the kind. If you are susceptible to that kind of sin, there is help, but for most of us, it’s just the opposite. We can see the beauty in everything BUT ourselves. I’m reminded of Van Gogh who created some of the greatest works of art of our time and yet ended up taking his own life. Today his work is valued in the tens of millions or dollars, yet he could not see the value in himself.

I know there are many of us who wear that tortured artist thing like it’s a badge of honor. It’s not it’s garbage, and for the Christian creative, it’s even worse. It borders on blasphemy. Here’s what you need to know. You are created in the image of God. See that in yourself next time you feel down on yourself. Not enough? You were given God’s ability to bring in to existence that which was not. God gave you the ability to create. DO you have any idea how special that is? Still not enough? You were worth so much to God that He gave His only Son for you. That is huge. If that’s still not enough I don’t know what to say beyond pray and ask God to show you your value.

Here’s the thing. People spend billions of dollars every year to see the most amazing things in all of God’s creation and in spite of all that money, most of us miss what’s most incredible. You see God created all those amazing things, and they are amazing, first. Then when He finished all that stuff we love so much, He set to work on His Piece de Resistance. His masterpiece—the creation He made everything else for—the thing He gave everything else to. It’s you! You’re the masterpiece. All those people around you, they are the true miracles. All of creation is beautiful you are more beautiful. You’re the apple of His eye. A beautiful creation, entrusted with the ability to create beauty. Love yourself and love Him more.

You’re beautiful.
