Wouldn’t it be great if all we had to do all day was make art and do the stuff we love? Well, I do think you should strive to make most of the things you do come from your sweet spot, but every once in a while we have to do things just because they need to be done. I had one of those yesterday.

You see one of the difficulties of being a speaker is most of my work is done on evenings and weekends. Of course prepping for the evenings and the weekends takes up a good portion of my day but the freedom in the schedule occasionally leads to some less than fun chores. Yesterday’s was a doozy. We had a shrubbery in our back flower bed that was starting to spread too far and wreaking havoc. It was determined by my wife that it had to go and she asked me very politely to remove it.

Now, I’ll admit it, I didn’t want to do it. I knew it would be back breaking work, but I also knew letting it persist would probably end up doing damage to the house so off to the flowerbed I went. I cut and I dug and I ripped and pulled for about an hour and a half and that was that, the bush was gone. When it was done, I was a hurting boy, but there was something else I was feeling…

It’s called accomplishment.

Why do I share this post on yard work? Because in pursuing the work we love, sometimes we have to do things we don’t love. Now if you’re one of those independently wealthy types, by all means pay someone to do this stuff and get back to doing what you do best. For the rest of us, sometimes the best thing we can do, is get the things that need to be done out of the way, so we can get back to what we love to do.

Our loved ones deserve our help too.
