createbetterIf you’re like many creatives, ideas come frequently. So why do we still feel blocked? From what I’ve seen a lot of the struggle is in making the decision on what to do and moving forward. Here’s a great way to keep moving forward.

1. Value your ideas. For creatives, ideas are gold. We need to respect them. A great way to do this is to write them down, sketch them out, record them in a way that works for you. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, just get enough to hold the idea. Put it some place where you know you will be able to find it. I usually use hardbound sketch books or record them in special files on my laptop.

2. Pick something. We all have the exact same amount of hours in a day. You will not be able to do all of them at once, no matter how good your ideas are. You’ve got to take a look at all your options, prioritize and pick one. From there, we come to the most important step.

3. Finish what you start. While ideas are very valuable, they only achieve their maximum value when they are completed and released to an audience. Ideas that are stuck in your head, don’t really help anyone. You need to bring them into some semblance of reality. If no one knows about it, it doesn’t exist.

At the risk of contradicting myself, I have one more tip. I usually have a second project in the works. I call this the block buster project. Basically, what this amounts to is occasionally creative block hits us all and sometimes it’s best to have something to jump to, to break the block.

In the creative process, starting is huge, but the bigger issue is starting what you finish. We need to get things done and out to our audiences.

In order to create a better life, we usually need to let people know we’re creating.
