Be Fair…Don’t Compare

nocomparisonComparison is a killer, especially for creatives. My vote… Don’t do it. Let’s face it, when we compare ourselves with someone else one of two things is going to happen, we will either look at another person and say, “They’re so much better than me, why should I try?” or we’ll say, “I’m so much better than them, why do they try?” You’ll either become discouraged or prideful and arrogant. Neither of thiose is going to be helpful.

Instead, just create. Bring your best to the work each day, comparing with no one but yourself. Before long, I predict you will see a marked improvement. The truth is, you are not responsible for another person’s level of excellent, you’re only responsible for your own. The best level of excellence you can give is your best. So do your best, make great stuff and realize your best tomorrow will be better than your best today.

The principle can be summed up in one word: FAITHFULNESS!

Don’t compare. Give your best. That’s enough.

  1. Dave, you miss another perspectives, the third and last perspectives. “That is the arts standard I need to reach.” Therefore, no resentment. Only hard work and practice.
