The Problem of Payment

My friend, Jessie Nilo of VineArts in Boise, ID posted a link to this article that bears repeating. It’s the saga of a band I’ve never heard of called Pomplamoose. Evidently one of the band members posted an article on the expenses of touring and got abuse from it on all sides. If you are looking to make a living with your art form, you may face a similar pressure. On one hand, people want to experience what you do for free or as nearly free as humanly possible, on the other hand when you try to raise funds in other ways to support it, you’re seen as a greedy sell-out. It can be a no win situation. Darned if you do, darned if you don’t. And if you think that is complex, add the word ministry to what you do.

Here is a link to the article. It’s worth a quick read and worthy of your consideration.

By the way, I checked out Pomplamoose and they are doing some pretty creative stuff with music and video. Here is a clip of a video they did using a single video projector and one take. It’s a pretty remarkable cover of The Buggles’ Video Killed the Radio Star. Pretty innovative stuff.

One last thing. I wanted to be sure to comment that I have almost always been treated pretty fairly by everyone I have ministered to and this is not a comment on anyone who I’ve worked with. It is just good commentary on the struggles we face as creatives.
