Challenge: Tension

Posted: May 26, 2013 in, Thoughts on art ministry and life

This week’s challenge, the word “Tension” is especially appropriate in light of all that goes on in our world. There is increasing pressure on the church to bow to political correctness, and the changing standards of a fallen world. That creates tremendous tension. It’s as if people expect followers of Christ to change the Word of God on a plethora of issues to fit the whims of society. The thing is the Bible is God’s Word. We can change what it says if we want to, but that changes absolutely nothing because God has not changed His mind. We are not supposed to change the Word of God, the Word of God is supposed to change us. It creates tremendous tension.

The other side of it is many believers will want to applaud what I just said, but there is more to consider. Jesus told His followers to love our families, our neighbors, our fellow believers, even our enemies, basically covering the whole of humanity. He claims judgment and vengeance for Himself alone. So what are we left with? Tension. We live with the tension between God’s verdict on sin and His command to love, to be in the world but not of the world. We accept God’s standards on behavior and obey his command to love knowing full well that people on every side will not like it. In other words…

We live in the Tension.
