A few years back I wrote a lesson for my friends at Interlinc to be placed in a special promotional resource for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe movie. They’ve just republished it for their 12 days of Christmas online promotion. If you’d like to give it a shot, you can download it here.

Interlinc is a wonderful youth ministry resource with teaching resources based on Christian music and other media. If you work with youth, I highly recommend checking them out. It’s a resource I’ve used for years.

Starting Thursday Morning, I have the awesome privilege of doing paintings at the Youth Leaders Hospitality area with my friends from Interlinc at the Creation Festival East.

Creation Fest 2012

Creation East holds a special place in my heart. It is where that I did my very first foray into ministry, where I baptized my son Chris and saw many people I love come to Christ. I can’t wait. I’m going to be doing some live paintings, giving away my ebook Ministering to the Creative Soul and a couple other goodies. The paintings I do (I’m hoping to do 16) will be given away as prizes and here’s where I need your help. You’ve seen my work. You know what I do.

The question is what paintings should I do to bless these hard working youthworkers? Leave your ideas in the comment section below.

I really am so looking forward to being at Creation East again and seeing my friends from Interlinc. It’s been too long on both counts. This festival often draws 80,000 plus. If you’re one of them please drop by and say, “Hi.” You won’t be able to miss me, I’ll be the one happily chained to the easel.

Also please be praying for me to have divine appointments with people I can help and people who can help me Run AMOK!

The other day I mentioned a lesson I was writing for the youth ministry resource Interlinc. I thought I’d give you a little better idea what they do. Now as you know, I am a huge fan of using the visual arts as a tool for ministry. Interlinc does the same thing with really cool music and every once in a while visual art and music collide. Such is the case with Circleslide’s video for the Song You Are Everything.

The band commissioned Artist Randy Elrod to do a time lapse painting video based on the song and turned it into their music video. As you can see they did a really great job.

My friends at Interlinc then got a youth worker to write a Bible lesson using the Circleslide video as a jumping off point. You can view that lesson by clicking here. As you can see this is a pretty useful tool for ministry to youth, especially those with a creative bent.

Now just to be sure I am not misrepresenting, Interlinc’s lessons do not all include painting and visual arts. Music is their thing, but it is still a great resource for working with creatives, especially their Music Video Loop which comes free four times a year with your subscription. The video loop just seems to click with visual learners.

I’ve written for Interlinc for years on a voluntary basis because I love this resource. This isn’t an ad. It’s just a recommendation of a resource that might be really useful to you.

By the way, I’ll be painting live at the Interlinc Youth Leaders Reception area at Creation East, Thursday, Friday and Saturday June 28-30, 2012. If you’re at Creation, be sure to look me up.

As many of you know I have been a writer for the youth ministry resource Interlinc for over a decade now. Interlinc is a great resource that uses Christian music and videos (as well as other media) for the “jumping off point” for Bible lessons. I write about 8 lessons a year for them and I really enjoy it. It gives me the opportunity to experience new music and gives a great creative outlet as I try to figure out the best way to create a teachable moment from someone else’s material.

My latest assignment was Cory Lamb’s video for Safe in Your Arms. I had never heard of Cory Lamb before, but this is a young artist worth checking out. The video tells a great story of unconditional love overcoming the tough times of life.

Cory also posted a little “behind the music” video to tell about his motivation for this song.

If you work with youth at all, especially creative youth, I highly recommend Interlinc. It’s a subscription based resource, in which you receive four boxes of music a year (a digital version is also available) and four video loops (DVD’s filled with the latest Christian music videos and other media) with a lesson attached to each album or video as well as a lot of other useful things. It really is a youth ministry gold mine.

I had a great time over the last few days doing art ministry.
My first stop was at the Church of the Brethren Church Planting Conference at Bethany Seminary in Richmond Indiana. I did a workshop on the concept of what it means to “Be the Body.”

I also did live worship paintings in each of the four worship gatherings.
AMOKArts COB Church Planters' Conference Mustard Seed
The first piece was based on the passage referring to faith the size of a mustard seed moving mountains. I went off the idea of the faith that it takes to plant a church with it’s branches reaching to the heavens.

AMOKArts COB Church Planters' Conference Pray for the City
In Jeremiah 29 the Bible speaks of praying for the peace of the city. This simple piece was designed to be interactive. The bridge in the piece represents what we do when we plant a church. We’re not taking Jesus to a City. God is omnipresent. He’s already there. What we do is build a bridge to the Gospel. When the painting was finished, the attendees were invited to “tag” the city with the names and locations of their churches and plants as a reminder for the viewers to pray for them in their mission/planting work.

AMOKArts COB Church Planters' Conference What's On Your Sheet?
This painting looks a little sparse and with good reason. Once again, the attendees were invited to add something to the piece. In this case the passage was Acts 10 where Peter sees the vision of the sheet being lowered from heaven with all the unclean animals on it. The key part of this was God reminding Peter, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” This passage is preparing Peter to reach out to a new people group. We used the painting to relate to the different perhaps non-traditional things we will bring to our work as church planters, bringing the Gospel to new populations. The name of this piece was “What’s On Your Sheet?”

AMOKArts COB Church Planters' Conference Noah
The final gathering of the conference related to the faith it took Noah to set out in faith and build the ark which has it’s own parallels to church planting. The piece is a simple representation of the story and of God’s promise to us.

After the conference, I headed north. My first stop was Fort Wayne Indiana where I met with Sid Gauby, a church planter doing a marketplace ministry, a coffee house that also hosts a church called New Ground Coffee Company Sid and I chatted for some time about the ins and outs of church planting and shared some ideas back and forth. Unfortunately I had to leave fairly quickly, but I do hope to return.

Next I headed further North to Ashley, Indiana and Pleasant Chapel Church of the Brethren. Pastored by Val Kline, Pleasant Chapel is the other end of the church spectrum from church planting. They are celebrating their hundredth anniversary this year. They are a vibrant welcoming and loving congregation. I preached on the topic of what it means to be the Body of Christ and did a speed painting portrait of Christ as a reminder that He is the head of the body and also did my Many Parts One Body interactive art piece with the congregation.

AMOKArts Be the Body at Pleasant Chapel COB
The final stop of the “tour” Involved a drive south to Miamisburg, OH to visit with my friend and Interlinc co-conspirator, Todd Pearage. Todd and his family took ,me to dinner and put me up for the night. After Dinner, Todd and I went to Springboro Baptist Church and led a youth gathering. We spoke on the topic of unity and I painted this piece.

AMOKArts Unity Painting at Springboro Baptist Church
It looks like just another portrait of Jesus, but if you were to watch the piece come together, you would see the painting begins as two faces nose to nose and in conflict. I had done this piece for a video a few years back and Todd asked me to dust it off and try it again. Todd did such an amazing job speaking on this one that I was convinced to add this piece to my next A Night AMOK presentation, tentatively titled “Be the Body.” My hope is to begin booking that one in the fall.

It was good to get home after a long time away, but I was so blessed to get to do all these things and meet all these people. It’s amazing what can happen when people get together to “Be the Body” of Christ.

I am really, really excited. As many of you know, the first thing I ever did in ministry was take a group of students from my church to the Creation Festival. Creation has been the place of some really pivotal moments in my ministry. I even baptized my son Chris there.

For over a decade, I have been a writer for the youth ministry resource Interlinc, and actually I got connected with them partially through Creation as well. Well this year, I will be painting live at Creation in Interlinc’s Youth Leaders Hospitality Area and I can’t wait. I look forward to meeting the youth leaders there, sharing my gift, helping interlinc and making some Kingdom connections. If you’re going to be there, I really hope you’ll drop in and meet up with me. If you’re not. I welcome your prayers.

By the way if you are in Youth Ministry, you really should check out Interlinc’s great resources. They provide really great Bible lessons based around Christian music, videos and other media. You can see more on them by clicking here.

Anthem Lights

Anthem Lights

A Bible study that I wrote just got published in interlínc’s Youth Leaders Only magazine. I’ve been writing for this ministry for years and I love what they do. They create Bible lessons based on the themes of Christian music. This particular lesson was based on the new band Anthem Lights and features one of my all time favorite art projects as the warmup activity. This project will be put in the hands of a bazillion youth leaders this summer. Check it out! interlinc-online.com/ylo84anthemlights
