Deadlines can be both friend and foe.

On one hand a deadline forces you to finish a project and ship it. Without deadlines some of us would never finish anything. In this case a deadline is your friend.

Other times, and I can be really guilty of this, a deadline can cause stress, aggravation and fear. In my life, this type of deadline is almost always self-imposed. I set a goal for myself, often an unrealistic one, and then stress myself out trying to do the impossible. Actually maybe calling the deadline the foe here is misstated. If the deadline is self imposed and unrealistic, the foe is the one who set it, in other words, I’m my own worst enemy.

How we handle deadlines matters. Often a deadline will feel unrealistic because we have waited too long to begin or because we focus on the whole job that needs to be done, rather than working incrementally, chipping away at the job a little at a time. I hear people say that they work better under pressure all the time. I’m not convinced that’s true. You may feel that, but if I asked your family what you’re like under pressure, would they have the same response?

If you are in the place to set your own deadlines, I highly recommend it. Meeting goals is a wonderful thing and as artists, without a drop dead date, some of us will tweak forever, especially if you have tendencies toward perfectionism. Just make sure the deadline is realistic and attainable.

No one will want to be around you if it isn’t.

Artist Rich Greinert carves the most amazing fish from wood. This interview allows you to see the story behind the art, as well as some technique. The work is astounding.

As I look at all the work involved in making a stunning replica, I stand in awe of our amazing Creator, who created the original and brought it to life and I’m reminded of Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…”

Today I’m painting and showing three of my pieces at the Snowflake Gala this afternoon. It’s my first Gallery show ever and while I’m really looking forward to it, I could sure use your prayers. The event will be held at the Mulberry St. Art Studio, 21 N. Mulberry St. Lancaster, PA. 2-6pm if you’re in the area come on over. http://snowflakegala.homestead.com/

I’m really excited to do this and yet I am also experiencing a little apprehension. Do you ever face anything like this?

A Gallery is a new setting for me which is kind of surprising for how long I have been doing this type of thing. Most of my work has been done for commercial purposes or in the church or on the web and given away.

I love having this opportunity and yet it’s like any time I step into a new environment. Will I get it? Will the people get me and my work? Will they like it. Will they like me? Am I good enough? I know none of these things are supposed to be first and foremost in the minds of an artist, or a Christian for that matter, but they are nonetheless. Sorry, I have my flaws too. What are your insecurities when it comes to the public expression of your work and your faith? Identifying them is a huge key to overcoming them and becoming what God has created you to be.

At the end of the day what’s really most important (or at least should be most important) is God and His glory. I’d love to sell some of my paintings and my merch, (I have a few projects I’d love to finance) but that’s not what’s really matters. If any of my pieces touches even one heart, that’s good enough. Above that my prayer is that God will use me to bless and encourage the people around me, that He will allow me to speak into someone’s life or that someone would see something I do and think “I wonder what would happen if I put my gift to work???”

Prayers appreciated!

It feels like forever since I have posted to the tribe. My apologies but I had a great opportunity to minister over the weekend at Saint’s Home Church of God in Christ’s Youth Explosion and Grace Temple in Terre Haute, IN. It was a great weekend. I got the opportunity to paint four paintings, do a 10 foot square street painting and preach the Word. God was at work and lives were transformed, to Him be the glory. I feel like I’ve made some lifelong friendships this weekend and hope to get back there again soon. Our topic for the weekend was The Church Has Left the Building: Takin’ It to the Streets and that is exactly what the folks did. We went to a city park and share the Gospel in song, art and word. It was fantastic. Many people were fed, prayed for and blessed. Below are some photos of the event (Thanks Jerry White).

If your church would be interested in doing a similar event, I’d love to help you out. Contact me at amokarts@aol.com.

The finished street painting. It rained in the middle of making it which took the colors down a little bit but it still came out pretty good, thanks to all who helped.

Christ Weiss in Children of Eden

Christ Weiss in Children of Eden

Sorry for their not being a major post today. I have been sick for a few days now and while I am coming out of the woods I still feel pretty lousy.

Please keep my son Chris in prayer tonight He is playing Father (God) in the Musical Children of Eden. The kid can sing like nobody’s business and his papa’s pretty proud of him. Just pray that he does well and brings glory to God in the process.

I’ve spent the better part of a decade writing lessons for a youth ministry resource. What makes the resource unique is that the lessons are based on the themes of Christian music. I’m a huge rock music fan and I love youth ministry so this was a really natural fit for me, but there has always been a quandary. What constitutes Christian music?

I’ve heard all these bands trying to quantify themselves. Some will say they are Christian bands while others call themselves bands who happen to be Christians. Fans are quick to take sides, some will say Christian bands who play a song that slides into the realm of the “secular” are “reaching out” and some will say they are “selling out.” Who is the gatekeeper and what is the criteria? How many times does Jesus have to be mentioned before a song is considered Christian and how many times can a band violate this principal before they have “sold out?”

How about the rest of the arts? Does a painting have to feature Jesus or a scripture verse to be Christian? How about plays and musicals and books, can they be Christian if someone doesn’t come to Jesus by the end? Can a Christian dance be Christian if there are no flags or streamers involved and don’t even get me started on instrumentals. I think we’re asking the wrong question.

As far as I recall, only people can be Christian. Our creations are just things. Sacred or secular is not so much in the work as it is in the heart of the artist. Why should we have to choose? After all the same God in charge of Sunday morning is in charge the rest of the week. I think compartmentalizing our lives into sacred and secular is defeating our purpose of always representing Christ.

Christians experience the same things as everyone else—the same temptations, the same problems, the same sins and on and on. If we are following the admonition to be in the world but not of the world and if we are going to be truly transparent, our subject matter is going to end up being pretty diverse. Honest expressions of those struggles are probably the best way to show a very real God to a very real world.

We could take a lesson from country music. Love it or hate it, there is one thing you must admit. They can record a song about Jesus and a song about their dogs, their pick up trucks and no one is shocked, surprised or accusing them of selling out.

God is the God over every part of our lives. Let’s seek Him for our subject matter and give Him our best. In the end He is the only critic that matters.

This video is an example.

Welcome to ArtChurch. Each week we will post the message of the week as well as the accompanying art video created by Pastor Dave Weiss. The purpose of this is to encourage you to use your own gifts to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the third message in our series entitled WDJD?/WWJD: The Search for the Radical Jesus.

As we look at what Jesus did and why He faced so much opposition and in keeping with the Christmas holiday we will explore more about why Jesus came. This time looking at His mother Mary. To see the art piece that went along with this message, check out http://amokarts.wordpress.com Sunday evening December 19. Remember these messages are for believers in Christ who have a real desire to follow Him and especially for people who are interested in Jesus but who are not sure about or may have been put off by us, His followers. We’re stripping away the religion and looking at what His book says is true.

The above is the sketch painting that goes along with the message WDJD?/WWJD 3 Mary Did You Know?
And now it’s your turn:
Watch the message and the video, read the scripture and create your own art piece to express Jesus coming at Christmas. Then if you want send us a picture of what you did and we will share it in the gallery on amokarts.com

Remember, ArtChurch is not a substitute for gathering to worship. It is meant to be supplemental to your walk with Christ and to be a resource for art groups who want to study the Word of God as they create. Worship is a lifestyle and AMOKArts believes that at least part of it should be lived out in community in a local church.

Just a quick message for the folks who follow my blog explaining the times when we are not at our best. No overt sin just tired and feeling a little too much like we’re doing it in our own strength. Sometimes we need to look at who is holding what and give it back to God.
