This chapter of Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, is one of the most crucial pieces of information in the book. Get endorsements. Hyatt breaks endorsements down into two categories, celebrity endorsements and satisfied users. I’ve been doing this for a while now for my speaking/painting (storypainting) ministry, though so far all my endorsers are satisfied users. I hadn’t really thought too much about getting celebrities because I can’t recall any celebrities having seen me speak/paint (several I would consider experts in the field of art ministry however), though after reading this chapter, I am realizing that there are probably some celebrity types who may look at my overall ministry, blog books, etc. and give me an endorsement and I am going to pursue this.
You can see my endorsements here.
Why is this so important? Am I just wanting to brag on myself? No, it’s important because recommendations open doors. It’s really important for ministries like mine. People in churches want to make sure that, in addition to a quality presentation, that the speaker will not lead their congregation astray.
I remember one such time. A former pastor of mine, who is a great man of God, brought an actor in whose program involved portraying the founder of our denomination. It sounded like a really interesting program, and it was pretty good until about half way through when “the founder of our denomination” started talking about his beliefs, at least one of which was out and out heresy. I can’t picture our founder having ever believing this and if he did thank God we repented of in in the last 300 years. The pastor was shocked. Lots of people were very angry and confused. Church leaders want to avoid those kinds of things at all costs and endorsements can really help put their minds at ease.
I usually ask for an endorsement as I am leaving the event or in the follow-up email I almost always send. Hyatt gives a lot of really helpful hints on getting these endorsements and you really need to read the book to get them all, but it all comes down to this: Make a great product/service/etc. share it and have people share why they were blessed by it,
