Andy Andrews is one of my all-time favorite writers. Few people can tell a story as well. He relayed this story on his blog and I pass it along here as a reminder to us all to keep our egos in check and make the most of every opportunity.

I want to tell you a story from early in my career, a story that is famous within my family, but that I haven’t told very much outside of them and close friends. I won’t mention any names because you would know them.

Years ago, we had three friends—one was a huge international superstar singer, one was a talent promoter, and one was an up-and-coming singer. We still have recordings of the singers. Both were immensely talented.

Exercising a common move beneficial to all parties, the talent promoter placed the up-and-comer on a tour with the superstar. The promoter’s hope, of course, was that the up-and-comer would be in a position to learn from the superstar and, in so doing, would develop lasting success.

Unfortunately, that is not what happened.

You see, the up-and-comer had five number one hits in a row. This was largely a result of him being in front of the superstar’s audience night after night on the tour. But the up-and-comer didn’t see it that way. He decided that, because of the success he was experiencing, he didn’t really need to learn anything else from the superstar. He didn’t need to be anyone’s opening act anymore. He was too big for that kind of thing. So he went out on his own and, on the way out the door, fired the talent promoter who had been his manager.

In a surprise to no one but himself, I suppose, the young, immensely talented singer immediately vanished from the national scene. Lasting to this day, it remains a professional disappearing act worthy of a great magician.

In some ways, this is a shocking story, because this up-and-comer was truly gifted. His songs were and are awesome. To this day, they still hold up. But, in many other ways, this is not a shocking story. It’s something you and I see all the time with people in our lives, whether it’s the child who didn’t think he needed to listen to mom and dad anymore or the athlete who chose to rely on talent instead of coaching.

We all know what usually happens when people choose to abandon the teaching that allowed them to find success—they experience failure. You know it, I know it, and usually the person to whom this happens knows it on some level. The odd thing is that they never expect that it will happen to them. And that is why I like to continually remind myself of this story. So I’ll not forget that I’m never done learning. There is always more wisdom out there, and we need to do everything we can to seek it.

I’m more than 50 years old and just now starting to feel like I’ve figured out a thing or two. But I’m also more and more determined than ever to surround myself with people from whom I can learn—great parents, writers, speakers, husbands, business people—anyone who has experienced success in an area in which I want to be successful.

Let us all remember this story as we endeavor to create the lives we want for our families and ourselves. We’re not done learning. We never will be. There is more to discover, more knowledge to absorb and apply to our lives. The fruit is on the tree. Are you ready to reach out and grab it?

I found this Ted Talk from Artist Shea Hembrey called: How I Became 100 Artists…

Here’s the copy that came with the video…
“How do you stage an international art show with work from 100 different artists? If you’re Shea Hembrey, you invent all of the artists and artwork yourself — from large-scale outdoor installations to tiny paintings drawn with a single-haired brush. Watch this funny, mind-bending talk to see the explosion of creativity and diversity of skills a single artist is capable of.”

I found this amazing. There is a real danger in getting pigeonholed as an artist. Most of us would like to try something completely out of our comfort zone but for one reason or other, mainly meeting expectations, I think, we stay in our zone.

People we’re artists, pushing the envelope of our creativity is what we’re supposed to do so here’s the idea. No I don’t want you to create 100 artists. But how about one? Think about the thing you would most like to do, think about the kind of person that might do that type of work, then create the artist and a piece of their work.

Post the artist’s bio and a link to the work of art in the comments. Come on folks, stretch yourselves. I can’t wait to see what happens!

Well today (Lord willing) is my first day at Creation East. This year I am painting in the Youth Leaders Hospitality area sponsored by my friends at Interlinc. My guess is I will not be able to post from Creation as the cell reception is not the best so I prepped a few posts in advance. Today I wanted to give you a retrospective on some of my favorite videos. I haven’t posted any new videos in a little while largely because my camera has given out. I hope you like these. They are actually listed as part of my booking page above in case you’d like to refer your friends to any of them. Remember, these videos are free to use and share. Ideas that spread, win.

One of my favorite creative pursuits is to make videos of art in process and use them to tell part of God’s story. These are some of my favorites.

I was going through some old photos last night and I found a few pieces that were crucial to my journey to where I am now. Each of these pieces has something to do with why you are reading this blog and why I am doing art ministry today.

Believer T-Shirt
So there I was, I had just become a Christian, I was 22 or 23 and I knew three things. I was an artist, I loved rock music and I wanted to serve the Lord. There was a local magazine called the Pennsylvania Musician that I used to get. I went through their classified ads and found all the Christian bands. I contacted them and none of them worked out, but one guy connected me with his college roommate, Dave Baddorf from Believer. I did their original logo, first T-shirt and stage drop. They went on to put out a couple albums back in the day. It was a great experience for me and probably the first time I used my art to serve the Lord.

VBS Backdrops.
This was one of my many Vacation Bible School Backdrops. This represents the first time I put my gift to work in the church itself. I was a new believer, floundering in a ministry that didn’t fit me when my pastor came to me with a project I could handle, something I knew how to do and it really connected me to the church. The ramifications of this project were astounding. When I came into the church I was terrified of public speaking. Painting these backdrops, led to acting in skits, which led to teaching classes, which led to youth ministry, which led to preaching and finally to the pastorate and speaking ministry I have today.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Backdrops
The ability to paint backdrops and large paintings led to a couple freelance jobs. Probably the coolest of them was I painted backdrops for a licensee of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While the project was extremely cool to work on this was also in some ways a huge stumbling block. The Turtles were making huge piles of money (billions) when I was doing this and the client had me convinced he was going to make me rich and famous. I sold out badly, and really fell into idolatry. This was a time of real turmoil for me. We were really broke, but God would always provide a job and a check when we needed it. God finally dealt with my idolatry or maybe he was dealing with it for a while and I finally got it. So guess you could say it was sort of the best of times and the worst of times. in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)

Theater Sets
Once I knew how to do backdrops another door opened to some of the most rewarding work I have ever done. I art directed the high school musicals for my alma mater for seven years. Beyond the fun of the art, this job ignited my passion for working with youth and when the youth leader position came open at church, I couldn’t wait to get started. It was out of my youth ministry that I discovered art as a teaching tool which was the genesis of AMOK as it exists today.

The Outhouse Mural
I place this one in for perspective. In some ways the Creation Festival is where my ministry started. The first thing I did in church ministry or at least the first church leadership position (since looking back almost all of it was ministry) was took a group of students from the church to Creation East. To say it was life changing is a huge understatement. One year the organizers of the festivals had a contest for people to design murals for the outhouses on the grounds. Mine was one of the designs selected and so I got to paint it. The irony is this: The festival gets about 80-100,000 people each year. After years and years of struggling to become rich and famous as an artist, the painting I’ve done that’s been seen by more people than any other is painted on a toilet. Some things just help you keep life in perspective.

Why do I post all of this? To remind you that God is always at work in your life so take the next step in faith. Zechariah 4:10 reminds us not to despise humble beginnings. You never know how God is going to use what He is doing in you, so trust Him and make the next step.

Inspired by an old Relient K Song and an even older ambigram woodcut, this painting video reminds us to see things differently and find the joy of the Lord, because remember, that’s our strength!

This message is based on Jonah chapter 4. Jonah ran from God, got turned around by a storm and a giant fish, and then finally went and did what God told him to do. When Jonah did what God told him too do, he saw great success. The whole city repented. You’d think Jonah would be happy…

Starting Thursday Morning, I have the awesome privilege of doing paintings at the Youth Leaders Hospitality area with my friends from Interlinc at the Creation Festival East.

Creation Fest 2012

Creation East holds a special place in my heart. It is where that I did my very first foray into ministry, where I baptized my son Chris and saw many people I love come to Christ. I can’t wait. I’m going to be doing some live paintings, giving away my ebook Ministering to the Creative Soul and a couple other goodies. The paintings I do (I’m hoping to do 16) will be given away as prizes and here’s where I need your help. You’ve seen my work. You know what I do.

The question is what paintings should I do to bless these hard working youthworkers? Leave your ideas in the comment section below.

I really am so looking forward to being at Creation East again and seeing my friends from Interlinc. It’s been too long on both counts. This festival often draws 80,000 plus. If you’re one of them please drop by and say, “Hi.” You won’t be able to miss me, I’ll be the one happily chained to the easel.

Also please be praying for me to have divine appointments with people I can help and people who can help me Run AMOK!

I finally got the chance to put all the great photos Donna Parcell took of A Night AMOK and put them into a promo video for the new A Night AMOK: Pix of JC page here on AMOKArts.com

Pix of JC is an evangelistic presentation, A Night AMOK: Pix of JC (Pictures of Jesus). This hour and half long program is designed to introduce people to Jesus and inspire and encourage people to “paint a better picture of Jesus” with their lives by representing Him well and using their God-given gifts to serve God and others. To bring A Night AMOK to your church, contact Dave Weiss at AMOKArts@aol.com

I saw this image one day on Facebook and I almost fell out of my chair. One of the funniest things I have ever seen, unless you happen to be this mother…
Is your message coming though loud and clear and is it the one you intended?
Now I know this is a child’s artwork and it is highly excusable, but when we are trying to communicate a message with our work, especially when that message is the Gospel, it is really important to check yourself, or better yet have someone else have a look to see if you’re clear. This can be a tough thing for creatives. We already know what we’re trying to say so of course it’s clear to us but will it have the desired effect on the people we are trying to reach with our message?

This funny illustration has a really powerful message… Clarity is really, really important.

Do your best to be understood.
