This video was posted to Vimeo recently. It’s called Caine’s Arcade.
It’s about a young boy who put his creativity to work and a community who got behind him. I’ve heard to date, since the posting of the video, $150,000 has been raised to further Caine’s Education. That’s the power of the web, creativity and a good story.
When Ifirst saw the clip, I wanted to weigh in but wasn’t quite sure what to say. Today Seth Godin weighed in and Ithought his post was golden.
Here’s what Seth had to say.
Lessons from Caine’s Arcade
Maybe you’ve seen this short film.
The first thing that made me smile was how willing Caine was to do his art regardless of how the world responded (it didn’t). Caine didn’t care. The goal wasn’t to be accepted, the goal was to do it right.
The second extraordinary thing is easy to miss. Around 3:30, you learn Caine’s folk-arithmetic trick of using square roots to validate the PIN numbers on each fun pass. Extraordinary.
And the third? Starting around the nine-minute mark, any entrepreneur with a heart is going to shed a few tears. In the immortal words of Caine Monroy, “and I thought they were here for me, and they were.”

This boy took the time to use his creative gift and put it to work and it changed his live in ways he could never have imagined. Someone took the time to tell Caine’s story and it changed his life forever. What can you do with what you’ve been given. Whose story could you tell? How could you make a difference?

I just love this story, and I applaud Caine’s Dad for the open-hearted support he gave his son. I think many of us who are art practitioners could maybe draw some encouragement from a 9-year old boy. His faith in what he was doing knew no bounds. Thanks for sharing this Dave!
You’re very welcome Lew. When I saw this video, I loved it. I was a kid like this and you’re right the encouragement this father gave goes a long long way. My grandmother was like that with me. She’s probably a big part of why I do what I do.
We have something, in addition to faith & art, in common then; I was raised by my maternal grandmother and her faith in God and confidence in me planted a good many seeds which are maturing even now.
